How to Wax a Surfboard

Before you get started, figure out what type of surfboard you are riding (size, shape etc) , and what water temperature you will be surfing in. This way, you will know where to wax the surfboard and what type of surf wax to wax it with. Take a look at the chart above and it will tell you where you will need to wax the surfboard based on the board type and size you will be riding.

If you need to learn more about what wax to use, take a look at our video blog on WHAT Surf Wax Should I use and WHY first!

Now lets get down to business and show you how to wax a surfboard the right way.

  1. Make sure the surfboard is clean before you put on a fresh coat of Basecoat. This is the first layer of surf wax you will be laying down on the board. It will create a thin layer of traction for your top coat to stick to.
  2. There are 4 different ways to apply the surf wax. All 4 ways you can use for both the basecoat and the top coat layers of surf wax. This video will show you the different application patterns for waxing your board properly. These different patterns will help you get the most coverage so you don’t have to constantly reapply the surf wax. Surf Wax Application
  3. Once you have applied the basecoat, repeat the same pattern application with the top coat.

This is not an exact science but the goal is to wax the board adequately enough so that you don’t slip off when you are trying to shred. Every time you head out for another surf session, make sure you have enough wax on the board. It might mean you use a surf comb to loosen up the current wax you already have on the board, or maybe you might add a bit of top coat in the areas that have the most wear and tear.

And there you have it! You now know how to wax a surfboard – any kind – any surfboard shape – in any water temperature!
